Proofreading

Proofreading has become a "lost art." Since newspapers did away with their proofreading departments, relying on automated "spell-checkers" instead of people, the results have been predictable: disaster. There are simply too many things these auxiliary programs do not catch. Doubled words, wrong words and syntax errors are just a few of the errors professional proofreaders catch.

       You've probably seen some of the proofreading samples, used as jokes or word-teasers. One of our favorites is "PARIS IN THE THE SPRING." It's easier to see when it's written out, but when the text is in the triangle, nearly everyone misses the second "THE."

Is It Really That Important?

Even when it's not something you consciously see, bad grammar and bad proofreading make a subliminal impression on anyone who sees them. A business trying to promote a professional image can't afford to take these things lightly. Customers see the mistakes, if only enough to think to themselves, "That company is not what it's cracked up to be."
